South Orange County is trading chains for local flavor, with a fresh wave of new coffee spots serving Yemeni brews, single-origin espresso, scratch pastries, matcha flights, and plenty of neighborhood personality.

And it makes sense. Coffee has become the new low-commitment outing, you can enjoy a coffee for (just) under $10, spend time with friends OR enjoy the free A/C while you get some work done.

People want places that feel personal: a good patio, a beautiful latte, and a room that has some personality, with comfy space to work.

There is also a bigger shift happening. Remote work changed how people use cafes and specialty coffee is becoming even MORE specialized and customized with cafes focusing on specific regional flavors.

While my teenage daughter still loves the familiarity of Starbucks, I am tired of their burnt beans and love opting for an independently-owned shop. The coffee is better and I love supporting local.

New in 2026

Alohana brings coffee together with acai bowls.

Americano’s leans into organic coffee, organic dairy, and house-made syrups and sweet creams.

Klatch Coffee opened inside Sprouts in Laguna Niguel in July, bringing the award-winning roaster’s cafe experience into an everyday grocery stop.

Ocho pairs fresh coffee with beautiful handcrafted patisserie.

Play Coffee is for the serious espresso crowd, with a multi-roaster setup and specialty brew methods at its Laguna Beach flagship.

Qamaria brings Yemeni coffee, spiced drinks, and a gathering-place feel to Laguna Hills.

Redshift’s new Rancho Santa Margarita location gives RSM a family-owned specialty coffee spot with in-house roasting roots and a more serious coffee-bar feel.

Cafe known for Middle Eastern and South Asian (MESA) flavors like cardamom rose and seaweed banana matcha. Previously located inside an office building they’re in the process of moving to a stand alone cafe in Lake Forest

Sur Coffee’s Laguna Beach location brings a surf-culture edge to the cafe scene, with an easy beach-town feel and a brand tied closely to surf and coastal lifestyle.

Vivot Coffee brings a fresh matcha-and-coffee upgrade to Mission Viejo, with first-harvest matcha, customizable matcha flights, real fruit purées, and plenty of milk and flavor options.

Located near Saddleback College, it’s also a comfy work spot with bar seating, outlets, and hours until 11 pm, making it one of South OC’s rare late-night cafe finds.

Opening in Fall 2026 this will be OCs very first honky-tonk cafe, with country music, and Nashville vibes.

These places have a point of view. And for locals who are tired of drinking the same chain latte in a parking lot, that is exactly the point.
