South Orange County has its share of well-known spots, but tucked between the beaches and planned communities are places that feel surprisingly off the radar—from a working farm where you can have lunch to a canyon that looks like it belongs in Sedona.
Here are eight worth checking out.
🌱 Ecology Center, San Juan Capistrano

A working farm in the middle of San Juan Capistrano isn’t something most people expect, but that’s exactly what you’ll find at the Ecology Center.
The space is part regenerative farm, part community hub, where visitors can walk through rows of produce, learn about sustainable agriculture, and actually eat what’s grown on-site.

After lunch on the farm, take a sound bath in the Peace Dome. Ecology Center, San Juan Capistrano
The farm’s café, Campesino, serves seasonal meals sourced directly from the land around it. Afterward, visitors can explore the gardens or book a sound bath inside the Peace Dome, a quiet, tucked-away structure designed for immersive wellness experiences.

🎨 The Anti-Mall, Costa Mesa

The LAB Anti-Mall offers a very different kind of retail experience. This compact outdoor center is made up of independently owned shops, vintage boutiques, record stores, and small cafés, all arranged in a walkable space filled with built-in water features and public art.
Rather than a traditional mall layout, the property feels more like a series of interconnected courtyards, where visitors can move from one shop to the next in just a few minutes. It’s an easy stop if you’re looking for something more local and less predictable.
When you’re done head across the street to The Camp, where there’s super cute little restaurants, a brewery, and shops

🎶 The Coach House, San Juan Capistrano
For live music, The Coach House emains one of the most accessible and intimate venues in the region. Located in San Juan Capistrano, the space hosts a wide range of artists, from tribute bands to touring acts, all in a setting where there’s not a bad seat in the room.
You can also eat dinner before the show so it’s a nice evening out.
Tickets are generally more affordable than larger venues, and the setup allows for a closer connection between performers and the audience. It’s a go-to for anyone who wants a live show without the scale—and cost—of a major concert hall.

The theater’s domed ceiling creates a fully enclosed visual environment, making it feel more like a cinematic experience than a lecture. Events vary throughout the year, including themed nights and special programming.

On April 25, the site hosts a special open house featuring live classical music, guided tours of the home and gardens, a traditional pysanky egg decorating demonstration, and samples of the famous Modjeska candy. Space is limited due to the location.

Red Rock Canyon in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park offers one of the most visually distinct landscapes in Orange County. The rust-colored sandstone formations create a setting that feels more like the desert Southwest than suburban OC.
The hike to the canyon is relatively accessible, making it a popular option for those looking for a scenic trail without a full-day commitment. It’s especially striking in the morning or late afternoon when the light hits the rock formations.
